Presenting Group Dynamics based on Home Ranging
Researches in Rwanda have been collecting data on mountain gorilla movement for well over a decade. Visualizing this data shows group dynamics that can't be seen from the ground. Kernal Density Estimation is used to determine the home range of each gorilla group by using probability to predict the likelihood a gorilla group uses a certain area. When the groups are overlaid and viewed over time, it can be seen that many groups share the same area. With continued deforestation and human encroachment, the land available to the gorilla groups has been severly diminshed, leading to increased conflicts between the groups.
